Skill Tech: Basic Training outlines computer skills basics with fun and age-appropriate online courseware. Club members perform activities toward the completion of larger projects, mastering valuable computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and other productivity software. Topics include:
- Introduction to the desktop
- Navigation skills & Internet safety
- Introduction to productivity, reference and educational software
- Learning Internet search skills to find and review information
- How computers work, identifying parts and knowing technical terms
SkillsTech II
Skill Tech II focuses on developing specific, age-appropriate technology skills with an emphasis on computer hardware, networking and the Internet. It teaches advanced yet practical computer skills to Club members ages 6 to 18.
- Features three eight-session programs for three age groups: 6-9, 10-13 and 14-18.
- Uses animated, interactive tutorials and hands-on, instructor-led group activities with a fun, spy-related theme with sessions called “missions.”
- Lessons are age-appropriate. Older members explore technology-related careers and learn to build a computer from scratch; younger members begin identifying essential computer parts and learn to perform Internet searches.
- Members gain a deeper knowledge of hardware and operations, including how to identify computer components and how they interact. They take apart and re-assemble computers, build simple networks, obtain insight into how technology could evolve and become familiar with the Internet and networks.
Digital Arts Suite
Using Digital Arts Suite software, Club members can develop creative and critical-thinking abilities as well as advanced technology skills by producing projects in Web design, graphic design, digital photography, music making or movie making. Digital Arts Suite curricula is available on myclubmylife.com.
Combining technology and art attracts members to tech centers, exposing them to creative uses for technology, including potential career interests. Programs also prepare them to enter the Digital Arts Festivals that run from September through May.
Web-based programs lead members through three levels of animated lessons and instructor-led group activities, gaining skills in Microsoft software such as Publisher, FrontPage, Movie Maker and Digital Image Pro. Online lessons are offered in English and Spanish and are suitable for ages 6-18.
Courseware is found on myclubmylife.com, BGCA’s Web site for teen members. Click the links to the left or on the images below to access the Facilitator’s Guide for each program. Printing these guides and placing them in a binder allows for easy reference.
NetSmartz
NetSmartz is a comprehensive program from BGCA and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. It teaches members Internet safety skills through engaging multimedia activities and offline interaction with Club professionals, in three age-appropriate modules:
- Clicky’s Web World for ages 6 to 7
- NetSmartz Rules for ages 8 to 12
- NSTeens: I-360 for ages 13 to 18
MyClubMyLife.com
Myclubmylife.com is a virtual Boys & Girls Club where teens can access content based on existing BGCA life-skills programs. Delivered in an easily-readable style appropriate to its teen audience, topics such as successfully applying for a job, healthy-eating habits, tips to excel in school, how to save money and similar topics are intended to aid teens in making good decisions. In addition, the site stays attuned to adolescent interests via music, movie and gaming features.

SkillsTutor
SkillsTutor will quickly increase academic achievement for students in grades K through Adult. Thousands of learners utilize SkillsTutor to refresh core academic skills.
Over 1600 basic skills and thinking skills lessons focus on the fundamentals of learning. Quizzes and tests quickly identify skill deficiencies and prescribe appropriate lessons. Students feel comfortable practicing skills in an engaging environment similar to standardized tests.
SkillsTutor is delivered online and can be used as a teacher-aided instructional tool or as a one-on-one tutoring resource with minimal guidance. Individualized instruction, diagnostic testing, prescriptive assignments and automatic reporting are incorporated. The easy-to-use management system monitors progress and generates accountability reports.
